Is "AVG Free" really a good antivirus software?

I'd like to know if AVG Free really is a good antivirus software, or do you know any better free antivirus software(s) out there? What are your experiences with AVG Free or with the free "Antivir" from Germany or with "AVAST Free"??? What is your view %26 opinion?

AVG is totally worthless. It is junk. I recommend active virus shield. It is by far the best free antivirus you can have.

Yes it is. The editors of PC Magazine have rated it right up there beside McAfee, Norton and other leading commercial brand software.
I've been using AVG for a fair while now and I have never had any problems with it, or with my computer for that matter. I definitely like it better than other's I have used.

McAfee anti-virus, and Norton are system hogs, they take up a lot of room, i had McAfee it took almost 50 minutes to do a scan, Have AVG free now and have no problams with it, its a good program.

I have McAfee now, and subscription is running out.

I don't mind paying for these programs but if there's free ones out there that will give me just as good protection, I don't want to waste my money.

Are the free firewall and antivirus just as good as payed ones and if so which would you recommentd?

I'm thinking the saying "you get what you pay for", meaning you have to pay for something of quality.

I had the free AVG free antivirus and it would come up on a regular time to update my virus scan. Now I no longer see the icon on the bottom of my screen and it no longer does the updates. It is still located on my desktop though. I had added what I thought was a free firewall, is that AVGw, that is also on my desktop now. Please help, I'm not young and still trying to learn the right way. What has gone wrong, can anybody help me.

click on the avg thats on your desktop and somewhere in the box that pops up is the firewall for avg you need to re-enable it. something has knocked it out it happens ocassionaly. when you re-enable the firewall it should put the icon back on the taskbar and once the firewall is active again it will do the auto updates

It means the FREE license key has expired, now you need to re-registrate for a new license key. Then it'll update regularly. Registration for a new key is also free.

My landlord got a new computer a few months ago, and I've been trying to help her with it. She won't pay for antivirus software (shes on a very limited income), and shes on the net. I'm concerned for the safety of her new computer. Is there a free antivirus program we can download? Or should I save my money and buy something for her from like BestBuy or something? I use AVG, Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. It is always good to have a mixture of programs because while none are perfect, you can keep your system clean with a few. The ones I use are all free.

Our entire system changed from Norton's Corp. to AVG Network addition. That alone is over 20,000 computers. I guess all of the "noob" technical staff here decided that better performance took precedence over bloatware.

There is always a trade off.

Typically, it does not matter what you decide to choose but will instead be using time on your computer to always be tweaking it and forgetting what you intended to have it for.
Zone alarm is good, but I have found Panda, even though it has to be paid for is well worth the money. You get free 24/7 tech support and $1,500.00 insurance on hardware damage if infected and damaged by virus or other malicious code. Nobody else offers these things. Norton does not catch things Panda catches, such as adware or malicious cookies, and if you try getting rid of Norton the program leaves behind awful mess in Registry. I also use Microsoft sypware defense which is free, not for any spy purpose as Panda gets all that, but for the 49 checkpoints, like guards watching vulerable areas inside computers and doesn't allow any potential harmfull changes unless you first ok them as safe. Free is just ok in my experiance, but purchasing a great Internet Security Suite is well worth the expense. I paid lots for my system why go cheap on security?

Avast is anoying, AVG has time and again found stuff that Avast didn't even see. Use AVG with "Hijackthis" (yes, thats it's name) and "Spybot search and distroy"

But, if you ever want to buy the very best antivirus software, that would be Zonealarm, hands down. If anyone, even on here, try's to tell you different, get thier IP address and send it to me, I'll show them just what a pile of dong any other anti is. Zonealarm, you can't even step on the curb, much less get up to the house, so to speak.
Switching programs may not solve your problem - are you using a limited user account that is being blocked from completing the update? do a google search on the message you are getting, AVG and your OS.

one, two or three antivirus installed on your computer is not enough to stop the viruses so it's good to have more than one antivirus.
Yes or No is depending on the result. I'm using Kaspersky Internet Security 7. I get what I pay for, and everyone does too. But I'm pretty sure that AVG is good for you. My recommendation is that you can use avast! software. It also has free edition.

Spybot search and destroy is awesome. it finds at least 3 things every time. plus it has tons more tools to use on it.
Keep using AVG. Save the Norton disk for something more useful, like a drink coaster, frisbee, or shim.

I have being using AVG for almost three years and don't have any complaints, it is among the top rated freewares in almost all prestigious magazines on the web.
I am using AVG free edition, A-Squared Free, PC Tools Antivirus and Windows Defender all at once. Contrary to what you read on this forum, you CAN run more than one AV program at once with no conflicts or degradation of performance. However, I am running 4 gigs of RAM also, so I have a tremendous amount of RAM overhead to use for programs. The only software conflict I have ever had while running more than one AV program is between Norton and PC Tools on an old Windows 98 SE machine. I suspect I had more troubles than the AV conflict, but didn't care enough to try to fix it. I just trashed Norton instead............it was easier.
PCTools products do get good reviews. The good thing is they have free versions of their products. They work great. Spyware Doctor from the Google pack is a must. I highly recommend it. I bought Webroots Spysweeper and spyware doctor finds stuff spysweeper does not. Having both is a perfect combo and I recommend running two anti-spyware products.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps.

hands down panda is the best internet security i ever had. i tried norton, but it had real problems removing viruses and kept showing errors. you have to manually remove them, but they can be difficult. i tried mcafee, but they suck and when you remove them it keeps prompting you to buy their software. its clearly the best since its easy to use with its user friendly graphical interface. and it blocks viruses, scripts, just about everything that is bad. you can block people from using your wireless internet. the firewall, joke detector, virus remover, spyware remover. and their support team is nice. im currently using linux so i don't have to use it anymore. but my license won't expire until october. i once ran a script on my cousins computer, it was a joke, norton didn't even block it. get it here www.pandasecurity.com or pandesoftware.com im not sure so many websites that have panda in it. i would go with the second one since it gives virus monitoring activity. looks more legitamate.

William V, I'd disagree.

I've been an IT Professional for several years, and I'd recommend AVG Free. It's protected my Windows PC very well for a long time. The only disadvantage is that it won't protect you against spyware: for this (and I'm afraid it's paid-for) I'd recommend AVG Internet Security.

However, I'd argue that the solution is more in prevention than in cure:

-Don't use P2P file sharing software.

-Don't open email attachments unless you know what they are.

-Don't run .exe files unless you know what they are.

-Use common sense!

Do yourself a favor and make sure you have a REAL virus protector in place and keep it up to date. DO NOT use one of the free registry scrubbers or antivirus tools so many here suggest. Some of these are just ok, but far too many are themselves evilware and most of them are pretty flimsy. Some actually implant other spyware, adware or even viruses or trojans on your system and make things worse--far worse. The problem with a weak antivirus program is that it gives you a false sense of security--like Airborne cold-preventer. Using nothing at all would be better as you would be more careful about where you venture on the Internet.

I use Norton Aniivirus and i use adware 07 anit virus software. look online. they are all cheap. norton protects you for a two years and is only like 135.00.00. Adware is free.

If I were you I would get Norton Antivirus. I have it on my computer and it works really good.
I use avg, and it works great for me. You can also go to www.trendmicro.com then to house calls and do a free on line scan. I use this as well once a week. Nothing is perfect so I use both and have no problems

AVG Free Antivirus and Limewire?

Hello all, I have a new laptop on which I've downloaded AVG free antivirus. A teen ager cousin of mine downloaded Limewire (free) on my laptop and used it a few times. Last night, AVG found a dozen threats (Trojan Horses). Thankfully it also fixed those threats (moved 1 to its archive and deleted the rest of the files).

My question is this - could I still have viruses on my machine that AVG didn't pick up? Is there anyway to find and fix them as well?

I'm going to uninstall Limewire right away.

Try a online antivirus scanner and a online anti-adware/malware/spyware scanner in safe mode with network to clean up your computer BEFORE you download anything.

Turn off system restore before you boot up in safe mode with network to clean your system restore points for viruses, spyware, adware etc.

To get in safe mode tap F8 when booting you computer.

Choose "Safe mode with network".

Go to Start 鈥?Run - type iexplore http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html Enter(ok).

Do a full system scan. If something is found, delete it, reboot and do the same again in safe mode with network.

When that scan does not find anything you reboot again in safe mode with network.

AVG is an amazing program. If you used all of these programs and it is still running slower than you would like, check to see how many programs you run at a time. Your CPU usage may be up toward the higher percentile. This is where all the programs are running at once making your computer slower.

Another thing you can do is disk defragment your hard drive.

This will take the programs used more often and put them in the front of yoru hard drive per say. Making them run faster.

Another thing you can do is format your hard drive. Basically, this is deleting everything off of your hard drive including your operating system.

This requires knowledge of computer and how to put an operating system back on. So have someone who knows what they are doing to do this.

In conclusion, it doesn't seem to be viruses that are slowing your computer down, the lack of computer maintenance is the cause.

AVG is a good anti-virus software but it is not great. However since AVG is free you have nothing to lose. I personally think Avast is a better choice for free anti-virus software.

I think you should try both of them and see which one you like the best. Just make sure to uninstall your current anti-virus program before installing another. You should never have 2 anti-virus programs installed at the same time.

I have found that Avast Anti-Virus is great. It is a commercial application that has been made freely avaliable to home users. They still have a very strong user base comercially and as they deal with companies are very up to date on their pattern files. I would probally stay well away from GPL or Community developed Virus Protection, as you are only as safe as the company that makes it.

The spyware scan seems inconsistent sometimes finding things sometimes not (2 minutes of each other), it has trouble removing TSPY.SN and keeps popping up to tell me it found TSPY.SN creating what is essentially an infinite loop.

When I boot into safe mode, the product fails to work properly.

Norton is pretty hassel free if you've got enough system resources for it not to be a problem. Updates by it self, does the job, and besides if you have a NT OS system resources aren't something you've gotta worry about as much anyway. At least not as much as you do with windows 98, which was a nice OS for the time but basicly screws you over with the OS system resources running out and thus forcing you to restart everytime this happens.

I'd recommend McAfee Security Suite. It is not dependent on IE. It has a real simple User Interface (UI). Norton's UI is not as good as McAfee's but, is a second best. You can turn alerts to the way you want. Standard though, is where a little alert pops up in the system tray and the goes away, (also it does take up about 1/8 of the screen).

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. The best antivirus software (that you have to pay for) is in my opinion two different ones:

Kaspersky- Extremely Secure AV, but really HD intensive excellent choice for desktops

Eset Nod32- Very Low Memory Usage this is HUGE when it comes to a laptop or other mobile device where you might not have the memory to spare like a desktop.

Free AV: Definitely a fan of the open source ClamWin for windows and Clam for Linux, also I like avast but it had trouble getting rid of a couple Trojans that I took care of with bit defender but the problem is windows still says you don't have any anti virus with all the free ones except AVG which as they mentioned is leaving mid January. Hi, i use avg antivirus free edition and i keep it up to date every day and always stop all viruses

yesterday! I downloaded a file and scanned it right away. It told me that the file was virus free but when i decompressed it, i end up with two files. avg is very effective. However, when you scan a compressed file it will only scan the files that are visible. You should have opened the compressed folder and scanned again so that all the files were visable.
